Follow these tips from Philadelphia dentist Dr. Pamela Doray to keep your smile bright and white this holiday season.
Best Foods To Prevent Tooth Stains
When you’re browsing the buffet at your next holiday party, go for crunchy, fibrous foods like apples, celery, carrots and nuts. Not only are these healthier choices, but they require a lot of chewing and
Don’t skip your greens! Spinach, kale and broccoli are also great for keeping teeth white. Dark leafy greens contain mineral compounds that form a film over teeth and prevent stains from penetrating the tooth’s enamel.
Avoid Tooth Stains From Coffee and Red Wine
It is possible to enjoy your favorite drinks without worrying about stained teeth. How? Keep a glass of water nearby. As you sip your favorite merlot or holiday latte, periodically take a sip of water. The occasional swish of water will help to rinse dark pigments from your teeth and prevent staining.
Skip The Candy, Go For The Gum
Sugarless gum is a great choice if you’re looking for something sweet to snack on between meals. Not only does chewing gum freshen breath, but it increases saliva production which will naturally clean the mouth and wash away staining pigments. When selecting a gum, be sure to choose one that is sugar-free and has the ADA seal.
Don’t Forget to Brush and Floss
No matter how tired you are at the end of the night, never go to bed without brushing and flossing. Dr. Doray says, “Daily brushing and flossing are the easiest and best tools that people have to keep their teeth white.” The longer you wait to brush your teeth, the more opportunity that stains have to set in.
When flossing, Dr. Doray suggests using a “C” shaped technique to remove both plaque and stain molecules from the teeth and gum. Download this helpful guide from the American Dental Association.
