Invisalign FAQs
Our patients have multiple common questions about their personalized Invisalign treatment, including:
Am I a candidate for Invisalign?
Invisalign is a great option for teens and adults who have permanent teeth. In addition, patients with severe orthodontic problems may not benefit from Invisalign as they may require traditional methods or even oral surgery to treat their dental issues.
Patients who clench and grind their teeth at night will require treatment for bruxism before we recommend orthodontics such as Invisalign. Bruxism can damage Invisalign aligners if patients have severe symptoms. We typically recommend clear Invisalign aligners for patients with mild to moderate orthodontic concerns.
How long is Invisalign treatment?
Invisalign aligners need to be worn for at least 22 hours a day. Although they can be removed to brush, floss, and eat, they are most effective when worn as much as possible. When the aligners are cared for properly and worn regularly, patients can complete treatment on time or even early. Invisalign’s average treatment time is 12 to 18 months, which varies from patient to patient.
What can I eat and drink while wearing Invisalign?
Patients must remove their Invisalign trays before eating or drinking. We recommend only drinking water when wearing the Invisalign aligners. Smoking, alcohol, and chewing gum must also be avoided. Food, gum, or even residue from tobacco products can stain the aligners or get stuck in the tray. Make sure you brush and floss your teeth after eating to keep your teeth and aligners free from infection or stains.
